Freezing My Butt Off

February 4, 2008 |

Over the last two days it has been cloudy, rain showers and unbelievingly cold here in Isaan. Well, I am now wearing jeans for the first time at home since I cam here, apart from those occasions where wearing something else have been appropriate. If I could, I would be wearing my fleece jacket too. But that has been confiscated by Nan, who is wondering if she should try and snake into a second pair of jeans.

The wool socks she got from my mother for Christmas is now permanently on her feet. Well, the temperature is not actually that cold. It’s like an average summer day at home in Northern Norway. The problem is that we are not there, but in Thailand.

Getting the boys out of bed this morning and to school proved quite a challenge. They lifted there duvets, and immediately cocooned themselves again, declaring the day off. School could not possibly be open in this weather Heurn announced, yawned and tried to go back to sleep.

Well, I almost took pity on them. But Nan beat me to it, ripping their blankets off, and sternly showing them into the bathroom for a very cold morning shower. Meanwhile I made some cocoa to go with their breakfast to warm them up after the shower.

Then it was ordering them on their bikes, with stern warnings, that should they stray on their way to school, consequences would be dire! They have both missed school a couple of times lately. Both times they went fishing with their uncle instead. The uncle in question I think would rather be flogged in public, and then have his skin removed with a cheese grinder than having to face the wrath of his little sister Nan again. So I doubt we’ll have that particular problem again.

Meanwhile I sit here in front of the computer, half expecting it to start snowing outside. Well, we are far from that yet. But that’s what it feels like. Looks like I have to go and buy myself a new fleece jacket to replace the one Nan has taken over.

That’s it!

    Haha,

have a look at my website - should be enough snow there to prove for Nan that she should never consider going to Norway in the winter :)

At home we would call it a hot summer day, and when it tips 20, people start to complain about the heat wave…

Rune, it has been very cold here as well in Ubon. I have been sitting around with tracksuit on and windows and doors closed.

The other night when we ventured out to watch the football it was jeans, singlet, t-shirt, jacket, socks, beanie and gloves. My friends back home laugh at this. They cannot believe Thailand gets cold.

Hope your suffering okay and you airplane is still in one peice.

I find it amusing that after only a few months there in Isaan your idea of dressing up for special occasions means putting on long pants…..

(can you hear the envy behind my comment??)

Once you’re used to 30+ degrees Celsius around the year, anything below 20 is really COLD!

He’s alright. I rang him yesterday and he is well. I thought he had fallen out of a tree chasing one of his planes but said this was not the case.

He is working on a blog at the moment but is finding it hard to get the time as it is such a hectic life living in an Isaan village.

Remember what Thai time does to a person, readers.

I live in Hovden.Thats in Setesdal, south Norway.Plenty of snow and today the sun is shining. Its beautiful. The ski season is going very well. Lots of tourists from many countries.I spend alot of time in Thailand and I know a slight drop in temp has Thai people running for a warm jacket.
Hovden might take a little while to get used to.
