Morlaming it up at the Wat
January 31, 2008 |
Yesterday there was a Morlam concert at the village Wat. Morlam is music style here in Isaan, and it very popular. So we took the kids over to “listen music” as Nan put it.
We arrived early and spread out our bamboo mat, and listened to the boxed music already blaring out of the loudspeakers. And then the villagers arrived, having a good deal of sanuk on my expense. A farang wanting to listen to morlam! That was a new one.
But the mood was a fun one. And most had brought their kids. Who where running around with their balloons that where sold next to the truck that held the mixing board. And as we sat there, chatting with our neighbours, the show started. Well it was morlam alright. Interspersed with some Thai style stand up comedy acts, that had Nan in stitches. She loves those shows. And even I get a good kick out of watching hose shows….well more watching how the audience react to it.
Anyway it was a nice mood at the wat. A few drunk villagers, but they where also not creating any trouble. Just being the victim of a little good natured ribbing. All taken with a smile.
And when the show was over, we walked home, with a sleeping Heart in my arms.
A good evening out in the Village!
That’s it!

I love your simple tales of life. Thanks.
I’ll be leaving within the year to spend my life in a small village in Central Thailand. I’ve been there often, have a small house being constructed and I think I have been accepted by the local citizens. I enjoy reading about your life.
Thanks Richard, and good luck with your new life in the village.
Great post mate.
The concerts at the villagers are always enjoyable as you said they have fun and there is always something funny to see.
