Computing Nan
January 13, 2008 |
Nan has her laptop computer now. And the first couple of days she was more or less circling around it, eying it suspiciously. Until I came home from shopping groceries and found her intensely concentrating on a game of pool on it. I have also filled it with music…but the real clinch is she discovered internet news papers. So now she is all up-to-date on the latest gossip from Bangkok!
I try to interfere as little as possible. She wants to figure this out for herself. I just step in when she asks for help…like when she cant figure out why the music is not playing, and the volume is all the way down.
She also get a lot of help from Heurn, who to Nan’s big surprise is a lot more internet savvy than she believed. So things are going well with that. The only spanner in the works is that we got a wi-fi router. But it does not have a way to connect via network Lan cable, and my computer, the desktop, does not have a wi-fi card in it. And such things are not for sale in Putthaisong or any of the nearby towns.
So we cant both be online at the same time yet. But we’ll fix that this week as we have to go to Bangkok. I have to get a new pass port, and we are also getting a new one for Nan, since she took my family name when we got married. And finally we’ll get our marriage certificate translated to English, certified and sent to the Peoples Registrar in Norway, so that our marriage will be recognized there as well.
But meanwhile Nan is getting familiar with her computer. The biggest hurdle is getting familiar with the keyboard. She types agonizingly slow. So do not expect her to be chatting away in MSN anytime soon.
Else we are installing a new entrance door to the place. The old one was so flimsy you could walk trough it and not notice it was closed. And there was a burglary in another village house a few days ago. So all the doors now has new and more solid locks. Well, nothing that will really stop anyone form breaking in. But last night, I got a full nights sleep, without Nan poking me, wanting me to risk life and limb stepping over Hearts toys in the dark, investigating some imaginary sound she heard. So at least Nan is getting some peace of mind, and I get to sleep trough the night.
Frankly I am not worried at all about crime out here in the village. Our doors are always left wide open all day, and only closed at sundown to keep the bugs out. We are going to put up a fence on three sides of the house, and a low wall in front. But that is just to keep stray dogs and chickens off the property. And when that is done, we may give another go of getting a new puppy.
Well, that’s it!
