The Week in Review

December 31, 2007 |

Been a week since my last entry. And well, it’s a combination of laziness, and simply not having time to write. Anyway, on the morning of the 25th me and Nan where picked up by Tony and his lovely wife Tae, and we headed for Surin to eat Christmas dinner at the Farang Connection, a British owned pub and restaurant.

The trip went without a hitch. But on arrival in Surin, I discovered I had left my passport at home. So Nan had to check us in at the Majestic Hotel where we where staying. The hotel is right on the bus station, and just a 100 meter walk from the Farang Connection and the Norwegian owned Oasis bar, who unfortunately for us where closed on the 25th.

The rooms at the hotel where clean, and at 800 baht a night in the middle of high season, quite cheap. So after putting our bags there, meself, Tony and Nan headed out to eat, while Tae staid behind at the hotel, not feeling so well.

At the Farang Connection we had a very good turkey dinner with all the trimmings, and me and Tony swapped a few war stories, and had a few beers. But they did not serve Thai food this day, so I went and had some food with Nan at a Thai restaurant, and then we went looking for a second computer. We are looking for a laptop that Nan can use, and I can bring to wherever I go when I start working again.

But we had no luck in Surin. We don’t know the city, and we where on foot. So did not look many places. The one place we found, had a nice Acer laptop. But with no OS loaded, and the sales assistant was not very helpful. Wanting 400 baht to load one so I could test the thing. So we walked out on him.

Nan opted to return to the hotel at this point, and I headed for the Farang connection, where me and Tony continued having a few beers, and chatting away. But since our ladies had deserted us, we took an early night.

Next morning Tony and Tae, delivered us back home, and we said goodbye. And not 10 minutes later, I received a phone call from Andrew. He and his girlfriend would be on the road the next day from Roi Et, heading for  Bangkok. So he wondered if we where home?

Certainly!, and the next afternoon I sped into Putthaisong to guide them to the village. But first it was some food shopping at the market. Nan had written the shopping list in Thai, so Andrews girlfriend helped out figuring out what we were going to get.

Then we headed for the village, where Nan cooked us a meal, and we continued the night dipping into the box of beer chang Andrew had brought, while the girls got their fill on Thai soaps on TV and chatting away as well.

Anyway, we where introduced to two very nice couples in the space of 3 days, and had a good time in the company of both. So Tony and Andrew, hope to see you and your much better looking halves again soon!

Okay, it does not end there. The day after Andrew left, Nan’s sister came home with her family from Bangkok. So we have spent the last days at mother in laws house. Yesterday we slaughtered a pig and celebrated the new year in advance, as most people that are home, will have to return to work on the 1st of January, so today is traveling day for most.

Well, it certainly was a party or five in the village. And I could hear at least 3 different karaoke machines going full blast in the village. By full blast I mean, we could hear the nearest one as if it was set up in our living room. That particular one was located across the road, and consisted of 4 enormous speakers, loaded onto a tractor, and facing our house. It was so loud the windows where  shaking.

Nan simply slept trough it. While I spent the night, well into the small hours on the computer. I could probably have joined them But the I do not know the people living there, as they are only here during the holidays, and getting fairly drunk as well.

Okay…now you all should be fairly up to date.

So that’s it!
