R.I.P. Mao the Mutt

December 19, 2007 |

crw_5917.jpgI went and checked on Mao an hour ago. Quarter to midnight. He was very weak. And just lifted his head and looked at me. So I lifted him into my lap to see if I could get some fluid into him. But that was a no go. So I just sat there on the ground stroking his head when he started to retch and puke. Then he whimpered a little bit, convulsed a couple of times, and that was it. He died in my lap.

Luckily the kids are sleeping at grannies house tonight. I have put Mao in a box, along with his food and water bowls, his squeaky ball, and some of his food. And tomorrow at first light we’ll bury him in the garden.

I have to admit I cried a bit for him while doing that. And I don’t really have any words for him, except he was just a goofy little puppy, that loved to chase his ball around and make it squeak. Then he would drop it in surprise, the ball would roll away and the chase was on again.

He was brave too, stood his ground against all sorts…and that became his demise. Well, he died from his battle wounds. Odin will make room for him by the fireplace in Valhalla…

The picture shows him the day he arrived in our house when he was just 3 weeks old.

That’s it!

We buried Mao this morning in the shade behind the rice house. The kids lit some candles and incense for him, then we put him in the ground.

Døyr fe; døyr frendar;
døyr sjølv det same.
Men ordet om deg
aldri døyr
vinn du eit gjetord gjævt.

Cattle die; Family die;
Die yourself you will;
But your memory
Never dies
If fame you win.
(Haavamal)

Farewell Mao, we will meet again.

    Rune, I’m so sorry little Mao died, the news brought a tear to my eyes too. He had a short but fiesty life and you will remember his courage forever.
    I know you know about Brunty and his sad loss. Maybe Isaan is not a healthy place for pets, it hurts so much when they go.

    I am so very sorry. It is so hard to lose a dog through old age, but far far worse when it is young. Many people would not understand, but I have been there. Again, so very sorry.

    I’m very sorry to hear about Mao. My first Thai pup died after 6 weeks and it broke my heart. I know that, however short, she had a better life with me than she might have done otherwise, and that makes me feel better. I’m sure it’s the same for Mao.

    I am so sorry to hear about Mao. Having lost two family-dogs myself to old age and one puppy that belonged to my wife in Isaan, I know how you and your family must feel right now. I hope you can take some comfort, however, in the fact that in puppyheaven there are squeaky balls everywhere you look, in bright colours, with different squeaky sounds, and they’re all yours to run around and chase and bite and have fun with - all day long… Rest in Peace, Mao

    Hey Rune and Nan. Noot and I am both sorry for your loss and know what you are going through as we lost our good mate Latte the white rabbit recently as you know.

    As Rachel said the short time he was with you his life was much better than it was before and he was loved and cared for right up to the last breath.

    Again we are sorry to here about Mao. Jason and Noot.

    Sad sad news Rune. Unfortunately all to common in Isaan in particular but no less heartbreaking. Mao found a place in your home and has left a place in your home for the next lucky soul to be embrased by your family. RIP little mutt.
