Not Much

December 8, 2007 |

We have some lazy days. The only thing of significance we have been doing was the other day when we erected our spirit house in the back garden.

This time without a bunch of people. Just me, Nan a couple of elderly family members who knew the procedure and Nan’s uncle, the village head man.

It involved erecting the spirit house on a pedestal, offering some food, placing a horse and elephant figure for the spirits to ride around on, a couple of dancing dolls, and some chanting from the old folk. Then me and Nan lit candles and incense, and string where bound around our wrists. Finished and time for breakfast.

Nan’s uncle also gave us the Thai national flag, and the yellow flag of the King, so now those are flying out front. So now everyone can see that we are doing things properly, even in the farang house.

Else we are just lazing around the house. Nan was complaining about headache this morning. She blamed it on reading to much yesterday. She picked up a book about Buddhism as a present for her mom, and now it’s Nan’s turn to read it. Anyway, she spent the morning sleeping on the sofa, and drinking water, so now she seems all spruced up as usual.

Right now she is over in the other end of the village, picking up her Honda Wave motocy. It needed the back tire changed, after going flat 3 times over the last couple of days. I had a look and the tire was completely bald. So we had that fixed.

Mao the Mutt is doing fine, and getting bigger by the day. He has found a new favourite spot to sleep, under some old planks and bits of wood stored under the rice house. It’s funny when one of the village dogs passes by. Mao does his best big dog impression, complete with growling and barking, the actual grown up dog just looks at him…growls, and Mao is under his heap of rubble in 2 seconds, poking his head out, growling back and barking his head off. The little one is starting to defend his territory.

That’s it!

Rune. It sounds like things are going pretty good there. I can picture Mao and I am laughing thinking about him growling at the bigger dogs and then running away.

Good to see and hear your enjoying Isaan village life.
