Let Rip

November 28, 2007 |

Last night Nan decided that Som Tam for supper was the thing. For those who don’t know what goes into that, here is some of the ingredients:

Some shredded green papaya,  small tomatoes, garlic, a fist full of whole red chili peppers, and the most important ingredient…pla ra, fish fermented in fish sauce for a year or so, and it stinks as you won’t believe it.

Anyway, she loves it of course. And yesterday she really pigged out on the stuff, complete with running nose, gasping for air and waving her hand in front of her mouth  complaining it was phet-phet mahk mahk - very very hot!

So later we crept into bed. And since it’s actually quite chilly at night, she literally ran from the shower to get under the bed-covers. Snuggled up to me to steal some body heat and then she giggled.

“Sorry teerak!”

I did not suspect anything, so I was about to ask her what she was sorry about, when something tickled my nostrils. Then I literally gagged, and fled from the bed.

“I fart”, she beamed at me and giggled some more, and while saying it she really let rip. The stench enveloping us was enough that even she had to get away from the general area of the bed, and we competed for the 3 meter stretch to the wall fan.

Gasping for air, I reminded her that:

“perhaps next time you have som tam for lunch, not supper?”

“I think good idea too”, and then  doubled over with laughter.

Well that night was spent while she had some minor explosions, and at one time she yelped and ran for the bathroom. So it even gets to them sometimes.

Anyway, today it’s farang food for supper. I just pray that it won’t give me gas in any way shape or form, or she will be merciless!

That’s it!

LOL, I’m sitting at work and am having a really hard time not laughing out loud when I read your description on how to eat phet-phet mahk mahk som tam - and the effects it can have… Brings back memories :-)
I think they sometimes eat som tam to get the stomach working, to cleanse the system so to speak. It’s like a Kinder-egg, som tam, 3-in-1: 1: Taking care of hunger, 2: taking care of stomach and 3: taking care of very old fish… :-)

See there, I had a totally different idea about this spicy food thing. That stuff makes my guts explode and I can’t even bear to be around myself! I thought the Thais were immune somehow. I guess now i know… eat the spicy stuff and let ‘em rip. rotfl

Thats so funny! Dago is spot on, but not enough oooooo in the poooooooot, this is the particularly stinky one. I have woken up from a deep slumber gasping for air, whilst Tae is also gasping for air from laughter, but with the quilt pulled up to her nose to block the smell…haha!….happy days!
