Another Visit at a Wat
November 27, 2007 |
Well, we make the days go by. Nan is knitting, and a couple of her friends have joined the craze. So now they are sitting in the yard all day, yak-yak’ing away while meter after meter of yarn is turned into scarves, caps and pot holders.
Nan’s mom is also here every day looking after her kitchen garden, that she keeps here. And yesterday she hinted that it’s time we have our house blessed by the monks. Here reasoning was that the bananas will be yellow by next week. What that has to do with the monks I don’t know.
Anyway she suggested the 30th of November as a preferable date. But Nan is not taking any chances. So we motored down to the next village together with cousin Pun and her husband Tui to find an auspicious date for the happening. The monk in residence there is the same that found our wedding date, and Nan seem to have complete confidence in him setting a good date. And he did. November 3rd was it (he arrived at this day by checking his calendar and mobile phone messages and found that this day was the only one he was not busy).
Now we only have to muster up another 8 monks, to feed and gift that morning, plus buy a heck of a lot of food and beer for the guests.
Pun had far more serious business with the monk. She want’s to set up business in Bangkok selling food from a cart. There are thousands of these there everywhere. And the food is normally quite delicious, and Pun is an excellent cook with a good head on her shoulders, so I wish her all the luck in the world. Her husband Tui is a good guy too who is soon off to another country on a construction job I think.
So for her it was a lot more work involved. Charts had to be examined, a lot of signs where made on paper with crossing lines, and at one time a calculator was in use. But the Monk finally could reassure her that her business would be successful. And from there on it was all smiles, and a lot of chatter between the girls and the monk.
All of the monks I have met so far seem to have a good sense of humour. And there is always a lot of talking back and forth between them and their flock, with plenty of laughs. So I actually enjoy going with Nan. Even if I don’t understand what is going on, and I am definitely not a Buddhist. Anyway, we’ll soon have nine of them in the house. Should be interesting!
That’s it!

have you ever heard of a monk making that kind of prediction and then it ending up wrong? I would be interested to see what the reaction would be…..
Geoff, you’re forgetting that the monk we are talking about is Thai. A Thai (monk) making a wrong prediction… Come on!
You must have mis-interpreted his prediction…
Good luck with the house-blessing Rune! It’s a good thing it will be done before the bananas are yellow…
PSST: Your date has come and gone….OH NO MR BILL
Good luck to you both on a very special day. It will fly by and all be over by 9am!
