I’m Hooked Up

November 23, 2007 |

Today was a day of complete joy. ToT came and installed my IPStar satellite internet connection. And so far it’s working after a fashion. And it’s fast enough for me to listen to Norwegian streaming radio. But it died on me when I tried to voice chat with my mom over MSN.

Well, there was no IP traffic, and I had to restart the modem, and that fixed the connection, so we’ll see tomorrow if I can voice chat with people.

Download speed is ok. I do not do torrents, only downloading the odd upgrade for programs,  and  Mozilla  Firefox came down in 2 minutes.  So  I am happy so far. It beats the GPRS connection trough my mobile phone by miles. And I can finally start teaching Nan what the potential of the internet really is when it comes to finding out and learning stuff.

Also I’ll be able to upload more photo’s for family and friends at home to watch. But I can not even access YouTube. So wondering if the Thai authorities have blocked it again.

Nan is watching cartoons with Heart right now. The little fellow is asleep though, so I guess we have to make up his bed and put him in it. That is usually the case with him. Totally exhausted after a day of farting about, getting dirty, scrubbed up and having fun.

Heurn opted for sleeping at his grannies house tonight.

Well, That’s it!

    Dago,

The Gold package from True Visions (UBC) was 1800 baht/M

The ToT IPstar internet is 2200 baht/m + 2000 baht instalation fee for 512/215 speed

The Youtube thing is irritating, but can live without it. I just wanted it to show Nan some fun stuff on the net.

Not so far away in the south of Surin my IP Star internet is a lifeline but it’s not so cheap and the service has been pretty poor. For the first few months it hardly ever worked. Now it never works in the evenings, I’ve no idea why.

What’s your experience as time goes on?

Great blog by the way and thanks for your comment on mine.

    Andrew

    Hey Andrew,

I am not impressed, but it’s working. I have to re-boot the router/modem box a couple of times a day. No problems in the evening so far.

The signal strenght I am getting is about 85% with the neigbours coconut tree partially blocking the sky some 10 meters away. So guess at some time I am buying that tree….

Anyway, I expect problems during the rainy season…
