Friends Visiting

dsc02054.JPGLast Friday night I discovered that one of my mates was in country, and another en-route. They where both staying at the Holiday Inn on Silom Road in Bangkok. So I shamelessly played on Nan’s soft heart, and persuaded her to take the bus with me to Bangkok Saturday morning, where we checked in at the same hotel.

Mark of Aussieland and Stein from Norway where my colleagues working as Radio Trainers in Sudan 2 years ago. Mark is still there, while Stein is now in my old job in Sri Lanka. And the 3 of us have not been together for more than 2 years.

So in Bangkok, we proceeded with a good attempt at drinking all the beer in the Big Mango. Stein and Mark did a fair deal of shopping, while Nan overdosed on orange juice, and did some shopping of her own. Including a pair of new jeans for me, plus some female things for her self.

Well, this was my first time out with the boys while having Nan with me. But nothing really phases her, and I think she knew I needed a blow out after 2 months up here in the village.

Anyway, Mark and Stein are good fun. And especially Mark has a motormouth that just spews out hilarity after hilarity. Where he gets it all from I don’t know. But he had both me and Nan in stitches once she got used to his thick Aussie accent.

On Tuesday Mark hired a car, and we sped up to Putthaisong and the village, doing a stop in Korat, to do some more food shopping for farang food for me. We just had to take advantage of the car.

Up here we had a couple of relaxed days. Basically just hanging out at the house, and we did a short fishing trip with no result. But it was good to speak with someone who understood every word I said. And just to catch up with those two jokers again.

This morning I put them on the right way down towards Korat and on to Bangkok, where I am sure they’ll make another attempt at finishing what little there is left of the beer in that city. Then motored home to a very quiet place, as Nan had taken her mom to Satuek on some familly business. So I just played some games on the computer until she came home.

Meanwhile, the dog has a new name. Nan calls him Mao, the Thai word for drunk. Well he has not quite got his balance yet and falls over all over the place. And it is also the Khmer word for black, his main color. I can literally see him grow now, and he is farting about all over the place, running around, falling over, tripping over his own paws, and generally being comical. So he seems to be thriving.

That’s it
