Making Rice

November 9, 2007 |

crw_5905.jpgLast night Nan suddenly decided it was harvest time. So we motored down the road, found a harvester crew, and they finished cutting her 7 Rai of rice an hour or so later. They dumped the rice on the road outside the house. And this morning we spread it all out on large netting sheets to dry on the road.

We where helped by another couple. Her cousin, Pun is back from working in Japan. So she and her husband, Tui spent the morning here helping us with the rice, only assisted by a few bottles of beer for me and Tui, while Nan and Pun had a few wine coolers.

After that was done we motored down to Satuek. Where I finally got my satellite internet connection ordered. They said they would deliver withing a fortnight. So we’ll see.

We then visited a furniture store, and Tui bought a huge cupboard. And with that loaded on the back of the beat up old pick up truck we returned to the village. We found the mutt sleeping where we left him in his box, but he was soon up and about.

img_5922.JPGHe is now moving about a little bit more, and is quite inquisitive. But does not like to go to far from his basket yet. And when he get scared, it’s tail between the legs and a hasty retreat to his little dog house. So after some brave exploring, checking out the entire yard he went straight to his box, where his milk was waiting. And after that, it was quite enough for a while it would seem, because he fell asleep  under my computer desk.

Oh, and the little bastard now has a name too. His name will be…(drum-roll)… Tum. Which means Black and White in Khmer. We got two votes for that name, one from Tui and one from Jason, who suggested the same name, only in Thai.

Later in the afternoon Pui and Pun brought their two kids over, and we fired up the barbecue, and me and Pui had a few more beers, having been assigned the duty of watching the fish on it, while Pun and Nan made some other stuff in the kitchen. Then Nan’s uncle came with his wife and kids. So we soon had a yard full of kids racing around fueled on coke and hot dogs to bursting point.

Of course Tum the Mutt was the center of attention. But he soon had to be rescued from the kids. So he spent the evening in his box, hidden away under the kitchen table, where he was quite content it seemed.

That’s it!

    What’s happening with the rice?

Well, the rice from Nan’s farm is distributed ammong the familly for their personal consumption. So right now it’s sitting in sacks in our rice house, waiting for her various brothers and sisters to pick up their lot. They share the cost of planting and harvesting it between them.

The rice from the rest of the familly land is first stored for a few months, then sold troughout the year. But this years harvest was very poor, and the quality of the rice they did manage to harvest was also not good, if I should judge the their faces as they grab a handfull, rub it between their hands, taste it and smell it.

Luckilly it’s a long time since rice was the only source of income in this familly…now it’s more just a nice extra income when there is a good harvest…

Covert those fields to crawfish. Bourbon Street Restaurant in Bangkok, off of Soi 22, sells only what he farms and they are excellent. I’m sure there is a market in Thailand for more !!!!

Her brother has allready started up a small scale fish farm to test and learn.

Nan has plans to plant something else than rice in the future. We’ll see what happens
