A Mutt in the Hut

November 8, 2007 |

crw_5917.jpgSay hello to “The Mutt”. He is only 11 days old, but his mummy does not have any milk for him, so he decided to come and stay with us instead. He chose to tell us that when I picked him up and the little bastard  promtly peed on me.

He is of course of questionable pedigree.  But we have a new member of the family. A very noisy member who is quite a cry baby when he does not get 100% of Nan’s very caring attention.  But that’s just what he is, a baby, whose main activity is sleeping, eating an shitting.

Well, we could always use a dog to keep the bloody chickens off the property. So we’ll see what we can make him into. I just wonder what the villagers will think when they see a farang walking a dog on a leash?

Now we have a problem. We can’t think of any good names for him. “Fido” will simply not do. So if anyone have any suggestions, please go ahead.

In other news, the Electrician came yesterday! So now it won’t be long until we don’t have to worry about the house burning down at night.

Also Nan’s mom is back from a trip to Bangkok to visit Nan’s sister. Heart was also going with his granny, while Heurn chose to stay at home. Something he can regret because Heart was obviously pleased when he came back. “Krung Thep (Bangkok) sanuk makh mahk” was his general comment on the state of things in the big city. Besides, his aunt had done nothing but stuff him with his favourite foods and sweets for 3 days.

Here in Isaan the rice harvest is well under way now. The framers are drying their rice on the roads, and tractors and harvesting machines and everywhere. So if you are out driving, beware when you come a round a corner as there is a lot of activity, specially on the smaller roads. I am afraid I have to disappoint Jason, as there will be no cutting rice by hand for me. Around here it’s all done with giant harvesters.

Nan’s rice fields are not quite ripe yet. She is making Jasmine rice, and is waiting for all the rice to go yellow before she harvest. But I guess it will be our turn soon on the road, drying rice.

Well, that’s it!

My wife named our Thai dog Keow, after her ex boyfriend, who will forever more occupy the status of a dog in our house…LOL

    Sugestion in Norwegian:
    Stripa
Translates to The Stripe…but sounds better in norwegian :o)

Garm or Garmr is a good name for a dog mate. Even Fenris if he grows up to be a really mean sob…

Thanks for the suggestions. Ulf I am very partial to Norse Mythology names, but it has to be a name the Isaanites (i.e the wife and kids) can pronounce. And I don’t think the poochies around here speak old Norse ;-)

That dog is almost a Toya, Rune…

Or a Lucky one, i think

Yup Onkel dag, including the white spot on the neck and a white tail-tip, he he. But he will be a tad bigger, judging by the size of his mom.

For those not in the know, Toya was the family dog when I grew up.

By the way, today he has settled down. It helped finding a puppy-milk formula that agreed with his little tummy. So today he has been sleeping most of the time, when not being cuddled to bits by Nan.

We also built a little box with mosquito netting outside, with leftovers from bulding the kitchen benches. So he’ll be outside tonight. We’ll see how it goes.

No cutting rice by hand. That’s just unheard of. How many Rai of land does Nan’s rice far have.

Noot’s family rice farm is 12 rai all up but they cut it by hand. A heap of the villagers help cut it, for a fee of course.

I usually help out for a little while but it is backbreaking work for an old guy like myself.

The new family addition looks good my friend. I am black and white mad. I only follow sporting teams that home colours are black and white so he would fit in here.

I would call him ‘Magpie’ but as you said you need a good Isaan name. In Isaan “Darng” ??? which simply means black and white.

Hey Rune I wrote the Thai spelling for darng but it turned into question marks. Not sure what happened.
