A Relaxing Day
October 25, 2007 |
Today we had another relaxing day. As we did not have any construction folks to deal with today, we got out of bed around 9, then just loafed around a bit, had a late breakfast and then we cleaned up a bit outside the house. Burning empty cement sacks, that sort of thing.
After lunch we motored into Putthaisong and changed the oil on the Honda Click at a total cost of 80 baht. It was the 1000km oil change, and next time I have to take it in is at 4000km.
Nan’s Honda Wave is a bit more tired though. And since we are planning that long trip down to Buriram, we brought that one in to have it looked at. Her exhaust pipe is just a lump of rust. And when we motored into Putthaisong I stayed about 50-60 meters behind her, and I could not hear the engine on my Click, it was completely drowned out by the Wave.
She also complained that the front wheel was vibrating quite a bit as she wen’t trough 60Km/h. So they are going to have a look at that too. I hope it’s just a case of balancing the front wheel as you do with cars.
Anyway, they quoted 1200 baht for the new exhaust pipe, and then there is other bits and pieces they will look at. We left it there over night as they did not have any original Honda exhaust pipes in stock. And they will have a good look at the brakes and everything, then give us a quote for fixing it tomorrow. At least when finished it should be a lot quieter, and hopefully a lot safer too.
While in town we wen’t to the supermarket. That is quite a strange place. In other parts of the known universe they stock food in the supermarket. Not so in Putthaisong. They have about 6 rows of shelves in there. 2 of them is dedicated completely to soap and creams. And it’s all female stuff. Us men are left with a measly little rack where they have a couple of shaving creams, a razor and thats it for us.
The next two rows are for instant coffee, tea and ovaltine. Then there is one row dedicated to plastic items and dog food. And finally an entire row for Thai chili sauces of various brands. Along one wall there is a row of coolers for sodas and chocolate milk. Then there is a little bit of chocolate by the counter. So for food stuff you go to the market. Which is quite excellent for fresh stuff.
But we did find something at the supermarket today. Wheat flour! Now we only need to find some decent cheese and I am in business making my pizza. But without cheese, but plenty of eggs in the fridge, I made pancakes when I we came home. So now I sit here full to the hilt. Nan tasted them, but was not so impressed. So she made that her excuse to pig out on som tam again.
So that was our day today. Tomorrow the plan is to venture forth and find the materials needed to have the kitchen benches and cabinets built. One of Nan’s relatives is apparently a decent carpenter, so we’ll see.
Else tomorrow night we are spending in the Wat. It is time for the monks to come out of the temples again, after their 3 month rainy season retreat. And Nan is eager to go as we missed out the last time.
Ok, that’s it!
And now a message for mom (please excuse the Norwegian)
Mamma send oppskrift på bolla å rundstøkka!

Hi Rune,
Haven’t been to that many supermarkets in Thailand. I have on the other hand seen my fair share of the ever so popular Seven-Eleven’s that frequent almost every street corner in cities such as Bangkok, Pattaya and, well that’s about the cities I’ve been in… By the sound of it, it seems you visited a Seven-Eleven, or at least a Seven-Eleven-wannabe…
Agree with you, the markets are spectacular! That’s something I find myself missing here in Sweden. Fresh-what-ever, although I’m feeling somewhat reluctant about the meat in those places, it can’t be good…
Oh if only 7-eleven would come to Putthaisong! It would be allmost civilized in there then. Nope I swear, the place is the size of a normal little supermarket at home. But all they stock is soap and dog food!
Nothing wrong with the meat at the market here. They bring it in fresh every morning. And chop it up into portions to sell. The soi that the market is in is apropriatly named “Food Safety Street” he he.
Anyway the amrket here in Putthaisong is quite clean, and they seem to have a rudimentary understanding of food hygiene in there. I can tell you a few stories from Africa though
Rune, Do they not have flatpack kitchen units or furniture in Thailand? On CoolThaiHouse.com I noticed his kitchen units were built from breeze block and concrete, then tiled. It sounds a bit over the top to me!!
Love to read you daily activities. I wish I could work out how to be doing the same. Cheers.
What happened to beep beep beeeeeep at 05:30 in your village Rune? In my village we don’t have to visit the market for meat, the lady from the next village wakes up everyday at 03:30 to go into the city, cut it into sellable portions and then drive through all of the villages in our neighbourhood selling by the plastic bag, but super fresh!
Hahaha, when u get out of bed at 9, no wonder!
Appart from the sky falling down, NOTHING can get me out of bed at 05:30.
And precious few meat sellers coming trough the village. But we prefer going to the market anyway. Need to pick up vegetables and other stuff anyway. And it gets us out and about for a while
DOG FOOD??? LOL, I was under the impression the muts were on their own.
where we are it is a status symbol to have a little falang dog, shows you have disposable income and those little critters don’t get on so well with leftover som tam….haha!
