Back Aching
October 18, 2007 |
And now back to our regular program. Today was a busy day. First off to Putthaisong on the motosai to procure something to eat and drink. We returned home loaded with a case of coca-cola cans, 1 kilo chicken legs, 1 kilo pork and a bunch of vegetables I do not know the name of. I am getting to be an expert of balancing various items on our motosai. But the Honda click is actually quite good for that.
We did get some nice carrots and potatoes, so right now Nan is cooking “lapskaus” or Norwegian stew. It’s one of my favourite foods ever since I was a little boy. And Nan likes it too. So we’ve had it at least twice a week ever since she was in Sri Lanka with me.
We found our entrance blocked by a small truck when we came home. It was the bottle and can collectors. And Mae was conducting business. She made the grand total of 85 baht, selling the beer and soda cans and bottles we had emptied since I arrived. The price was 50 satang or half a baht a can. So recycling must have made it’s way into the darkest corners of Isaan.
The rest of the day was spent shoveling sand and gravel for the concrete we are putting around the entire house. It should make our environment less muddy when it rains. So right now my back is telling me it’s been a while since I held a shovel. Yeah, dad, you can stop laughing, I can hear you all the way down here.
Besides, half the village have been here to eye the crazy farang working. The most heard question was “why don’t he just pay someone to do that for him”. Indeed! Why did I not?
Typically now that I am all covered in sand, mud and sweat, running water is out again. And we used most of the stored water for the morning shower. So not only will it be a bucket shower, but I think we have to do it with about 3 scoops each.
I hope it’s back tomorrow morning though.
That’s it

Good to hear you are pulling your weight and some more. I feel sorry for you my friend but I hate to tell you as I don’t think you have cut rice (Gil Kow) yet. This will break your back.
The first time I did this it made me respect the old ladies a whole lot more I can tell you that.
I hope to see pictures of you doing this too.
