The Final Stage

October 3, 2007 |

We are now officially married, as yesterday morning we motored into town and got our marriage certificate sorted at the amphur. It wen’t well, as we had all the paperwork in order. But it may have crashed right there.

I did not detect anything. But as we sat there and waited while one of the officials leafed trough our papers and asked questions addressed to Nan, a more senior looking lady, who also did not sound very pleased came over and used a fairly harsh voice with Nan.

She however kept her smiling composure, and was extremely polite with this lady. I could tell because her usual “cha, cha” as answers to questions became “kha”.

Me I just sat there with the most polite facial expression I could muster. As relayed to me later was that this official did not want to issue any marriage certificate to us, because another thai-farang couple had been there some time ago, and did not have their paperwork in order.

The bride to be had then been very impolite, and “yak-yak’ed” everybody, including the head of the office upstairs, and causing all sorts of commotion and trouble for the poor bureaucrats. So their attitude towards the ladies who marry farang was not exactly good.

But Nan managed to charm them all, and had the whole office laughing and smiling before we left. Even the stern one had a giggle. So all in order.

Nan also chose to honor my family by taking my family name. We had not really talked about that. It did not even occur to me that she may want to. But she did, and I must say I feel a bit proud that she did it.

It meant that she had her name changed on the Tabian Ban -the house book, and also got a new ID card, and I suspect we need to get a new pass port for her as well. But hey, it’s all in the name :-)

Anyway, I guess I am as married as you get. I’m one happy dude today I am!

That’s it!
