A Little Bit of Shopping
September 19, 2007 |
As it turned out that the embassy was closed today. We slept in, and eventually emerged from the hotel around noon. I needed to get myself a SIM card for my mobile phone, and Nan wanted a look around.
So we shuffled down the soi and onto Sukumvit road, and navigated down the street. We managed to find a shopping mall, and I procured the necessary SIM card. Then, as hunger was about to overtake me, I decided that the only right way of action was to have an enormous double bacon whopper with cheese at Burger King. Nan ordered an ice cream, having more sense than to pig out on burgers.
Next we just browsed around in the shopping mall. This was a high end place we found out, when Nan enquired about the price of some very good looking kitchen knives that caught her eye, and the answer was a whopping 45000 baht. Her eyes went wide, and I think her mouth remained open for a full minute after her lower jaw hit the floor.
She quickly regained her composure however, and triumphantly waved a 300 baht cheese cutter in the air.
Next we walked back to the hotel, where my teerak promptly fell asleep with the TV set to one of her Thai soaps.
Me on the other hand has been busy at the computer setting up the GPRS connection for my newly acquired 1-2 Call Sim card. And it actually works. So I should be able to get online in the village when we get home…I hope.
It also means I have opened up the comment facility again, now that I can get online and moderate a little bit
Ok, thats it for now.

Good to see you are settling in well. I will be visiting my Thai village in January. It will be the first time that I stay in the village for a week. I want to be able to use my laptop and get on the internet. Can you explain more about what it takes, how you are doing it and the cost.
Thanks
Mike
Hi Mike,
The only option is probably to use a mobile phone with GPRS which I guess all of them have these days. I have a Sony Ericsson W900i that came with a USB cable to connect with the computer.
I simply bought a normal 1-2-call SIM card for 250 baht, and inserted it in my phone, then wen’t on the Sony Ericsson support website, and from there I just put in my model phone, what country I am in, my phone number and what
GSM provider I use, and they SMS the setup to me. Install it in my phone, and use to software provided with the phone to connect.
Sony Ericsson phones is a breeze to set up for internet connections. Have not tried with other models.
You can also buy a seprate thingy that connects via your USB port, those cost around 8000 baht. And the shop will set it all up for you.
Good luck!
