A Dinner Party
September 3, 2007 |
Saturday I invited some colleagues over for dinner. It was to be Nan’s first ever attempt at cooking for Farangs only. So she was a bit snappy for most of the afternoon as she chopped, fried and boiled all the stuff she was going to make.
She did ask for some advice regarding what these Farang people would like to eat. And my advice consisted of a helpless: “Just cook something good from Isaan”. I guess that was pretty useless for her.
I did attempt to offer my assistance in the kitchen, thinking I would be allowed to help chopping up some of the wird stuff we had been purchasing. But was thrown out of there with a: “If you want to help, cook some farang food!”.
But she got trough it, but was visibly nervous before people arrived. Then she had no time to be nervous. Just confused as the first one trough the door, handed over a bottle of wine, and gave her a hug before she had time to Wai anyone. She was in fact so shocked that she forgot all about Wai’ing and just stood there with a confused smile on her face when the next guest put her hands on her shoulders and kissed both her cheecks.
Then the party simply followed the normal routine.A bit of small talk and drinks, followed by food. A nervous Nan was thrown into further shock as people helped themselves to generous amounts of Som Tam (she had made a little bit just as a taste of real Isaan food), and also the rest of the spicy stuff went down well.
But she did have a good time, and when people complimented her in abundance her earlier concerns on weather her food was good enough vaporized.
After food we simply did what Nordic people (well, we were 2 Norwegians, one Icleander, a Vietnamese grown up in Norway and Nan of course), do at such occasions… we solved world problems, and when the beer and wine was gone, we attacked the Vodka, and at last resorted to drinking Gin.
I think Nan had a good time. She got a dance with one of my colleagues, an in promptu singing show by myself and my dancing colleague that had her speechless, and when we started playing “Ramstein” from the stereo around 3 in the morning, everyone left, and we could go to bed.
Her only comment before falling asleep was:
People Norway are all ting tong!
That’s it!

You played “Ramstein”. How did that go down. That is some seriously good music.
Good to see you all had a good time.
I remember when mum and dad first met Noot and Ben and dad gave Noot a kiss on the cheek as she went to politely Wai him and then mum had her arms around both of them hugging them like a bear.
It is funny when I go to a party with mostly farangs and you see the Thais stuck in a limbo at times between cultures.
Say Hi to Nan from Isaan. Hope all is going well.
Jason and Noot.
Oh the Ramstein was just the finale. Most of the time it was Morlam and Luk Thung. They seemed to love Tai Oratai, and some even asked if they could copy the CD’s…incredible
Ramstein! Holy cow. That must’ve been some party 555.
What the … is wrong with Ramstein. It’s the ultimate boyband, I know. But since was that a crime?
