Nan in La-la Land: The Salmon

August 29, 2007 |

Here in La-la land, the selection of culinary delights are few. By culinary delights I mean food imported from Norway. The only exception seem to be Norwegian Smoked Salmon, which now and then are available at the supermarket.

So I was delighted the other day when I was able to secure a kilo of this king of fishes. Now everyone knows that the only way to eat smoked salmon is to cut it into thin slices, and serve it on fresh brown bread with scrambled eggs and a healthy dose of mayonays. That is everyone except Nan.

So today when I came home from lunch, I gave her a good hug and a kiss as usual. I could smell that she was cooking something, but her secretive nature prevented further inquiries to what it was that would be on the menu for lunch.

But she eventually produced something allong with rice and sweet chili sauce (spiced up with extra chili) that resembled fried chicken skin.

I looked at it but could not quite determine what it was so I asked:

-What is this honey, I never seen that before?

-Fiss, teerak

-Fish? Good you went to the market alone?

-No, you buy fiss. How you fo-gett?

It finally dawned on me. She had simply found the raw looking fish in the fridge, and promptly fried it up for me. I said nothing, but had a hard time containing my laughter. But it tasted excellent, and can certainly recommend this to others.

That reminds me of the first time I was going to impress my comming wife with a homemade dinner at my place. I was serving fresh fried salmon and consulted my father, who’s a coock by profession, for hours to be sure everything was perfect. In the stress i took heavily salted smoked salmon out of the fridge instead. You might imagine how that tasted after being salted and fried in butter :P We ate all but the fish, and dispite my failure we got married at the end :)

Hmmm…maybe her version was better becouse it was pre-sliced, so it was all in very thin slices, and hence not so enourmously salty. Anyhway, it will be fun to introduce her to fried up fenalår. And in a few days I get the chance to introduce her to brunost :-)
