Nan in La-la land: Home is Best
August 23, 2007 |
So Nan has been here a few days now. And she has settled in well. A bit too well actually as she more or less refuses to venture outside, claiming she have plenty sanook at home. Well, the big screen TV is probably the reason for that.
She’ll do anything to avoid having to go outside. But yesterday was the farewell dinner for a colleague from my job, and I had to go. And Nan grudgingly followed. Another colleague was driving us to the Chinese restaurant we were going to eat at. And the three of us arrived before everyone else.
The place was completely empty, but our host soon arrived. Followed by the rest of the people I work with. So we sat down and ordered food. When one of my colleagues in a friendly note remarked that maybe Nan could recommend something since we now had an “expert” on Chinese food among us.
Nan have never tasted anything like Chinese food before in her life. And the menu in English and Chinese was of no help to her. So I carefully stepped in and said… well, that would be like asking a Norwegian for expert advice on Spanish food. Nan just sat there and beamed her most charming smile.
After a little wait, food did however materialize on our table, and Nan tucked in, but as she said when someone enquired if she liked it.:
“Not like, but can eat”
Else she managed fairly well, seated with a bunch of farang that spoke in a mix of Norwegian, Icelandic and English with heavy Nordic accents. And even laughed at a couple of jokes. But she was very relieved when the bill was finally payed and we could go home.
This morning I asked her what she thought about the food. And she said some of it looked like Thai food, but the taste was different and too sweet. But I doubt there will be many Chinese dinners in our future.
What we did have, I have no idea. I just ate what was ordered and that was it.

Glad to hear things are still going well. Am I to take it you’re back in Norway now then?
No I work in another Asian country, but a clause in my contract says I can’t blog about it, hence we are in La-la land
