Big Shopping
August 21, 2007 |
So we entered Tesco Lotus in Korat. It’s our usual pitstop for some foodstuff and some pressents for the boys. But this time we where doing some big shopping for the hut.
We made our way over to the electronics department, as we were looking for a TV. Nan had her heart set on a Sony, but the only one they had in her words “not look good teerak”, so we looked at various other TV’s when something caught my eye.
It was a TV complete with a DVD player and surround system. And they where asking 11000 baht for it. I made the calculations and compared to prices in Norway it was a steal. We did not really need a DVD player as Nan have one. But big speakers I like. So negotiations started. I would try to bring the price down a bit. No go. No way where they going down. I lot of joking and smiles all the way. And I ended up paying what they asked, but only if they gave us the table the TV was sitting on for free.
Then it was on to finding a fridge. They had plenty, and we settled for one that came with a free floor fan. So that was another 7000 baht. It had a freezer compartment. A pretty standard fridge. And same type that had been running fine in Nan’s mothers house for the last 7 years, so Nan was happy with that purchase.
Nan picked out a rice cooker, and I threw in a karaoke microphone as well. Then we needed something to cook on. We don’t have a kitchen yet, but we got a simple double gas burner unit for another 800 baht. It will do until we have somewhere to put a real unit with an oven.
So off to pay for everything, load it onto the pick-up and we set off for the final 2 hour drive to Putthaisong…

A karaoke microphone?? Rock on Rune!
I will be rehearsing my Iron Maiden lyrics and brushing up on my air guitar for our upcoming visit to your new abode.
Geoff,
Ever tried to spring a party in Isaan without karaoke? It simply is not done.
But I’ll see what I can do with my half remembered Creedence Clearwater Revival stuff. And I’ll bet a bottle of Sang Som that I can beat you at air guitar any time!
Not really worth me trying to sneak my enormous old 36″ CRT into Thailand then is it? Even though it was state of the art about 8 years ago. LOL
I think you can find something that will fit your purpose here, yes. And it’s only going to be used watching Thai soaps anyway, so get two TV’s if you plan to watch a little on your own…lol
