Nan in La-la Land

August 19, 2007 |

That was it, I am back in La-la land after my latest visit to Thailand, Isaan and Nan. Who is right now zonked out on the sofa right behind me sleeping.

It was quite a trip, spent in it’s entirety in the village, except the last night which we spent in Bangkok, before boarding the flight over here.

As usual I’ll lay out every detail… well… almost every detail of our time together in Isaan. But first I can’t believe she is here with me. And she had quite a welcome yesterday, as when we arrived, there was a farewell party for a colleague of mine in the same building. So she got a total of 15-20 minutes in my apartment, before I dragged her up a couple of floors to meet all of my colleagues.

But she is a trooper, and took them all by storm… uh…a somewhat shy, but still smiling, and able to crack a few jokes at my expense, and making them all laugh storm that is. We stayed long enough to get some free food, and say hello to everyone, and the made a tactical retreat down to my apartment where we fell asleep.

Today we woke up to an empty fridge. All I had was some jasmine rice. But a quick fix was to run downstairs and buy some eggs and bacon. Which Nan cooked. We where joined for breakfast by a somewhat hungover colleague, and then went shopping for some real food. Thai food that is.

Nan was delighted to find most stuff she craved for at the supermarket. So the fridge is now filled to the rim with strange looking vegetables and green stuff, chicken and enough pork to feed a small Isaan village for a month. The fridge has never looked so healthy since I arrived here 17 months ago.

The bathroom now has all sorts of good smelling soaps, creams and other female stuff. And back to the kitchen again. On the kitchen counter sits a large jar of brown, smelly goo, along with the papaya she brought from home. Yup… she made me pack her jar of pla ra…

The only problem right now is that the supermarket did not have red chili and fish sauce. But that can be fixed tomorrow when we go to the vegetable market. And I think I know where to find that fish sauce too.

OK, that’s it from me know…more to come, including pictures of “the hut”… so stay tuned!
