The Kitchen

August 2, 2007 |

Nan had another good shower of rain last night. And she says the rice paddies now “have water little bit”. But she hopes it continues for a few days more.

We are discussing where to put the kitchen area for the hut. Nan does not want an indoor kitchen, as she does not want the smell from cooking food inside the house. Well, if you have ever opened a jar of “pla ra”, you will understand her.

Instead we are going to erect something under a roof outside, probably around the back door. So we’ll make a concrete floor with tiles, build some kitchen benches and some cupboards, and some nice work surfaces, and a cleaning area, brick up a fair sized barbecue and install a gas cooker. The whole thing will be open air, but we’ll need some kind of screen to keep the neighbours chickens out.

Nan will be in charge of that project, but I’ll add some farang input to it. But that we will start with this in September. We are going to move in now though. And we’ll need somewhere to cook. So we’ll buy a simple gas cooker, and I’ll brick up a simple little barbecue. That should see us trough for the two weeks.

Else I am itching to go. And days are so slow that I am started to suspect that the whole concept of time have been suspended.

That’s it!

Sounds nice, and really, I think it’s very cosy to cook in the outdoor kitchens. :)

I was just looking for your email adr. but I’m lazy so wrote here in stead. I’m bringing my BF to Isahn for the first time (we’ve been to Thailand before, but I didn’t want to go see my family in Yasoo without my mum, as my thai is really quite limited), and I wondered if you could give us some tips on what to go see in Ubon and maybe where to stay.
