Have You Ever Seen the Rain
July 31, 2007 |
Large parts of Isaan have not received enough rain for the rice paddies this year. Nan planted early, like everyone else in the area, when the early rains came back in May/ June. But since then, there has been but a few showers. And she has been more and more worried as the fields dried up, and the water level in the ponds and the rivers sank, and some of the rice has turned yellow.
But today the sky opened up around 3 o’clock, and it has been raining hard and steady ever since. She finally got the big rain she has been hoping would come for several weeks.
She was jubilant when I called her just a few minutes ago. And I could hear the noise of it pounding down on the tin roof of her moms house. She has not dared go and check her fields for several days. Fearing what she would find. But that’s first thing on the program tomorrow.
So that’s one happy puppy!
Today’s menu is frog and rice. The boys where out in the rain and brought the grub back to mom. I can just picture the scene. Two proud boys coming home from school with a bag full of the critters. I think those will be the moments when I dive into the stash of farang food and cook my own meals. Luckily that wont be too often as she says that “I not like, but can eat”.
And as for the rain. They will probably need two or three days of steady downpour if the harvest is going to be saved. So making my small offerings to my gods tonight. Thanks, my wife needs it ![]()

Rune,
Yeah it was one heckuva storm yesterday. I had a sudden strong urge to go in my back garden and start building an ark.
Well, the rains continued today. Yesterday it rained until midnight, and today it started again around six in the afternoon while I was on the phone with here.
The rice paddies where all drenched good, and she hopes it will continue for a few days.
