tai3.jpgDuring my last trip up to the village, Nan was totally engrossed in some Thai TV soap. I don’t know the name of it, but it was set on some kind of farm where everyone wore cowboy outfits, else I guess the plot was the same as in every other Thai soap.

I really liked the title song of it. The singer had a beautiful voice and, well, the melody has not left my head since I left for La-la land. But I have no idea what song it was or who was singing. But I suspect it may have been Luk Tung singer Tai Oratai. It sounded similar to her work.

When me and Nan where driving around, if I heard something similar on some radio station, I’d leave it on. Besides it gave Nan a break from listening to my rock music. So I kind of think she approved.

Well, that melody stayed in my head. But did not do much about it, until fellow blogger Geoff from geoffandamy.com, wrote a piece about Morlam music. And I started to look for it on Youtube. I did not find the particular song, but I did find a whole heap of Luk Tung music. Among them Tai Oratai, and I am completely smitten by her voice.

Her music is now played round the clock. Well, I do get these crazes sometimes. It can be everything from a new computer game, to some new activity, and I am hooked.I can’t understand a word she is singing of course, but it helps with the youtube karaoke videos, as they are small stories in pictures. A lot of love stories of course, but also about crops failing, and the young girl who have to leave the village and find a job in the city, only to be exploited by her employer, but she struggles on and saves money to send home, then the money is stolen, there is some crying, and eventually she goes home to a forgiving mother. Quite touching. I must be getting soft.

Nan is of course having a field day with this. As it’s considered girlie music. So the teasing has no end. But I guess the battle of what music will be played in our home is won…she wins yet again.

Well, I’ll sneak in some punk rock now and then :-)

She likes me that way. When I hinted that she may lose the pum puyness in her farang when moving to the village, she said she liked my soft and cuddly, and did not want a sack of bones in her bed. So what am I going to do?

I bought a load of Tai Oratai CDs las time I was in Thailand - I think she’s great. Soppy folksy music isn’t normally my thing, but my car has been humming along to Tai Oratai for the last few weeks!

I knew it was not only me. Finally some ammunition against Nan’s teasing :-)
