new_temple-1.JPGOn the 7th of July, Her Royal Highness Princess Somsawalee of Thailand will preside over the opening of the first purpose built Buddhist Wat to open in Norway.

The Wat and cultural centre has been built on 17000 square meters of land by Wat Thai Norway and the Thai Buddhist Association of Norway outside the Norwegian capitol city of Oslo at the cost of 108 Million Baht.

The purpose of the Wat and cultural centre is to give Thai Buddhists and others an opportunity to learn and to practice Buddhism. The temple will also make Thai culture known among people in Norway.

The day of the opening coincides with the day that His Majesty King Rama V passed the location of the Wat on his state visit to Norway 100 years ago on the 7th of July 1907.

There are more than 4000 Thai people in Norway, with over 70 of them living in it’s most northern and remotest outpost at the Svalbard Archipelago at 78 degrees North.
