Gone Fishing

June 26, 2007 |

dsc01253.JPGOn arrival in the village it we were greeted by Luk Dik, Nan’s mongrel of a dog. He was on his best behaviour and did not jump up on me once. Her mom was off visiting a neighbour, so we just had a shower, and Nan cooked up something to eat. Then we went fishing.

dsc01263.JPGThere is a small river just 50 meters from the house. It has fish. The problem is making them strike. I tried everything in my arsenal, to no avail. I was casting steadily, and managed one spectacular one, and watched my lure disappear into the brush on the opposite bank.

As I was struggling with trying to pull it lose, I suddenly spotted Nan on the other side. I was a bit baffled by this. How did she get over there?

dsc01270.JPGShe unstuck my lure, and the answer to my question was sort of easy to find. She simply jumped in, and started swimming around gathering some water plants. If there was to be no fish, at least we would return with something to eat.

She came back to my side, and ordered me into the water. “You smell, go swim!

So left with no choice we were swimming about and playing in the water for a while. Kind of fun!

No no, she does not do that. Instead she jumped on her motorcycle, went to the market and bought a couple of kilos of fish, then sat and gloated as we had it for dinner, allong with the water plants she had gathered :-)

I forgot one point in my reply. Remember it’s not catching something thats important, it’s being out there, and experience the beuty of the nature that surrounds you…yeah, right!

I wanted to catch a fish, kill it an eat it!
Next time little fishies, next time it’s barbecue time!!
