Buriram
June 26, 2007 |
So motored on to Buriram. We entered the town just as the streets where filled with students on motorbikes. The Police where out in big numbers and stopped quite a few driving without helmets and probably for other things as well.
I was happy. They where to busy to bother with a confused farang. We drove around a bit as Nan wanted to “look, look”. Finding a hotel was a bit more difficult. We found one, but the run down, smelly room without air con was not to my liking. So we asked them to show us their best room, and was shown to the dungeon. It did not even have windows. And what apparently made it their best, was a water heater.
So we got into the car to “look, look” some more. Nan tried to ask some locals, and was pointed in 3-4 different directions. We where driving aimlessly around. When a spotted something. Stepped hard on the brakes, reversed and parked. A tackle shop!
Inside was a sports fishers dream. Rods of all types, reels, lures, hooks, lines and a jovial looking shop keeper, who loved fishing. I could see it from all the fishing pictures on the wall. Unfortunately he did not have a word of English. But his assistant spoke some, and with some help from Nan it was ok.
I picket out a nice Rapala medium rod, and a Daiwa reel, an assortment of lures in all shapes and sizes, and the owner spooled my reel for me with some 35 pound test braided line. I also got a tackle box. It all cost me 4000 baht, and Nan made a joke about expensive fish.
As I browsed the shop I spotted a shelf containing an assortment of Abu Ambassadeur reels. My mouth started to water when I checked the prices. 2500 baht for a reel that cost at least 5 times as much in Norway. I’ve always wanted one. They are a piece of art!
But one look at Nan, put me off that temptation. Yup, I am definitely married! But we’ll see if I can’t sneak off to Buriram on my next trip. I got the shop pinned on my GPS.
So we loaded everything into the car. I turned towards Nan.
“Do you want to go fishing?”
“Can, with you Teerak”
“Ok, lets go home”
“What you mean home?”
“Home to the village, honey”
Her face lit up, and she was all smiles and jubilation. So we set forth on the one and half hour drive back to Phutthaisong. We were going fishing!
