A Honeymoon in South Isaan

June 24, 2007 |

We had planned to travel around in Isaan a bit anyway. But now our holiday trip had turned into a honeymoon. Strange what life deals out don’t you think?

So we set out towards Khon Kaen first. The only reason we went that way, was that Nan needed to get herself a passport, and Khon Kaen is the closest place she can get one. It was a pleasant drive up there, mostly on secondary roads with little traffic. And it took us only a couple of hours. Including a short food stop.

So on arrival we first headed for the passport office. It was not hard to find, even for a couple of navigationally challenged people like us. There were big blue signs leading us straight for the local governments offices. We got the car parked, and Nan popped inside the building with her household registration and ID card in hand.

I waited outside, plugged into my iPOD and with a book I sat in the shade of a tree reading. But only twenty minutes later Nan was back with a smile, and the receipt for the passport in hand. There was a 1000 baht fee, plus another 35 for the pictures. And the finished passport would be sent to her within the week.

Our next mission was to find a hotel. Not so difficult that either, as Khon Khaen is a well developed town of some size. We ended up at the Charoen Thani Princess Hotel, simply because it was the first we came to. I checked in with Nan waiting in the car. No problems, we got a room on the 7th floor, and we were soon having a shower, and then a some sleep…

We woke up in the evening, ravingly hungry. So we ventured outside for a meal, and found a small restaurant on outside the hotel but still on the grounds of the hotel. The food was okay, and we sat there for a while chatting about our wedding. We then took a short walk around the neighbourhood, but neither of us was up for much. So we got some snacks at a seven and headed back to the hotel for some…uh…movies ;-)

The next day we woke up early after all that sleeping. Our internal clocks where set for village time anyway. So we went for a walk again. I looked at some motorcycles. Then Nan was hungry so we had some street food. Nan wanted to see the lake. There is a huge one in the middle of Khon Kaen, surrounded by schools and temples. So we took the car and drove over there. We walked along the the lake for a bit, and sat and looked.

There were plenty of fish in it, and further down we rented a pedal boat, and bought some fish food. So we pedalled the boat out and fed the fish. Quite fun and Nan loved it.

“Look, there is a big one, and have many”

“Yes, this is cool”

“hmm, make good barbecue, maybe come back tonight when nobody can see and go fishing!”

“Yeah, that would be fun, but I suspect somebody may not like it”

“Yes, sure, but tonight I think we eat fish”

So that was settled then, fish for dinner tonight.

After the lake, we tried to find the Dinosaur museum. But our navigational skills betrayed us again. We found some road signs pointing us in the right direction, but we must have missed one, because we kept driving and never found it.

So we returned to the hotel and had fish for dinner. Then, well, we went to the room…
