Shopping and Chopping
June 22, 2007 |
The next morning, the day before our wedding was quite busy. A quick breakfast and then a drive down to Satuek to shop for the rest of the food. I had another mission down there as well.
In the car were myself, Nan and two of her aunts. And they were all chattering away in Khmer for the half hour drive. But we found our way and parked outside the market. The ladies disappeared inside, and I snuck off towards the gold shop.
I found an assistant who spoke a bit of English, and he helped me pick out a nice bracelet and a necklace for her. 2 baht in gold all in all. He also threw in 4 whiskey glasses with mickey mouse depicted on the side. And also a nice jewelry bag. I stuffed the gold in my pocket, and headed for the market.
I found Nan and her aunts busily going over a pile of food supplies, making sure they had not forgotten anything, and promptly ordered me to go and buy beer. So I headed across the isle, and got some boxes of Beer Chang, a couple of bottles of Lao Kaow and some Sang Som, a crate of coke and soda water.
By know the ladies had accomplished their mission, and we loaded all the stuff in the back of the pick-up truck, and headed back to the village.
Well back in the village, the house was filled with people milling about. So the car was emptied with seconds. And the ladies started chopping stuff up. I was told no more driving would be required of me that day, so someone stuffed a Beer Singha into my hand. Which I needed dearly right now.
I sat there and watched everyone at work. The music had arrived, and Morlum music was blasting away from the loudspeakers on the back of her brothers tractor. I helped her uncles hang up some plastic sheeting’s over the yard to give some shade for the chopping ladies.
And such went that day away.
