The Hut
June 20, 2007 |
After consuming a delicious breakfast consisting of omelet, rice and some pork, I was sitting there and watching Nan as she fluttered around the place, singing some happy song, and looking very content. The kids where getting ready to go to school, so she was fuzzing over them a bit, making sure their uniforms where clean, and and everything else moms worry about before sending them off.
They pedalled away on their bikes, and we were alone. Her mom had gone off to see a neighbour. So I asked her if we could go and see the hut. She looked like a frightened deer caught in the headlights for a moment. Then put on a brave smile, and said, sure we could.
So we rolled out her motorcycle, and sped off to the other side of the village.
And we were soon parked outside her house. It was a small concrete and brick house, with the facade facing the street. She led me to the door on the side of the street, and we were inside a quite spacious place. She switched on the light and the place was not bad at all.
The house consisted of two big rooms, divided by a wall. Three of you count the entrance area. It was all raw concrete and cinderblock. But it had windows with curtains, and some cupboards. Nan told me that she used to have a Noodle shop here, and they were also selling gasoline for the village motorbikes from two oil drums equipped with pumps that were still stored outside.
She led me into the gardens. There were two of them One kitchen garden on each side of the house. Flower beds along the walls. A storage house for the rice, and a wash-room and toilet with running water.
All in all, for Isaan, a nice place. I gathered her into my arms, and told her:
“Nan, I can stay here, I love it.”
She was quiet, as I held her. Then I noticed her eyes all welled up, as tears rolled down her cheeks and a choked up “Thank you” came from her. So we just stood there and held each other for a while.
We went inside again, and I had a second look at the place. The floors needed tiling. And the walls needed stucco cement and some paint. And we have to put in an inner roof, as it was just the corrugated iron sheeting between us and the sun.
I measured the place up and it was 56 square meters all in all. Nan grew more and more happy as I made my notes, took pictures and went over everything that needed to be done. And she soon came with her ideas. She wanted the walls painted white, and a green floor.
“Green floor!”
“Yes green, and outside too!”
“Ahem…green tiles, can we have another color?”
“I like green, but up to you, can have other color”
So that catastrophe avoided, we settled for light blue, and green on the outside. Now we needed to find out what it all would cost us…
