The Big One
June 20, 2007 |
We were back at Mom’s place, and she had just come back from the visit at her neighbour. Nan was doing her stuff, cleaning floors, and other chores around the house. While throwing glances at me and then towards her mom. We had something important to tell her and I was the one who was going to do the talking, with some help from Nan.
I was quite nervous about it. Scared out of my wits actually. But it had to be done. So I took a deep breath, motioned Nan over, and together we sat down in front of her mom, and wai’ed her. This was the point of no return.
“Mae, I love your daughter Nan, and I will be the happiest man alive, if you will give your blessing and let me marry her,” I blurted out.
Nan translated, a big smile on her face.
Mom looked me straight in the eyes for several seconds. Asked a couple of questions directed at Nan, who smiled, nodded and squeezed my hand. Then mom looked at me again, smiled and said something in Khmer, followed by:
“OK”
I looked at Nan, who was all smiles.
“She say okay, but we have to go Wat for see monk”
And that was it. The whole moment took about 1 minute. My brains where sort of crashing. It was sorted. I was going to marry Nan. She was going to be my wife in a few months I was thinking. We had been discussing this over the phone ever since I proposed to her back in May. The marriage would be when I was finished in La-La land in September. We would first fix the Hut, then get married. Provided her mom accepted it.
I managed to gather myself. I wanted to give her mom a big hug, but this was Thailand. No hugging. I pressed my hands together, big grin on my face and “Kawp Khun Khap, makh makh”. This of course achieved nothing but a big hearty laugh from mom, who completely loses her composure every time I attempt speaking Thai.
So there it is. We were going to get married. Beat that!
