Getting There

June 18, 2007 |

Okay, so I got there. Landed in BKK about 2 hours late and hurried myself to gate 7 were Nan was supposed to meet me. But instead of a smiling Nan, I only saw a bunch of other people waiting. Now Nan is only 150 cm above sea level, so she can sometimes be hard to spot, so I did not panic.

I fished out my mobile phone, and called her. And while waiting for her to pick up, I felt a pair of arms snake themselves around me from behind, and there she was, all jubilation and with a big smile…and what a smile it was. We sort of got lost in each other for a minute or two, before I gathered my farang senses and remembered I was supposed to pick up our rented pick up truck as well.

But where was the AVIS counter? We did a fair amount of “go and come back” as Nan put it, before we realized there was none. We must have looked fairly bewildered, as a security guard came to our aid and informed us that indeed this was the case.

So we called them, and were told to look for a man in a red shirt who was supposed to hang around gate 5. And there he was.

About 15 minutes later we were on our way. I proudly switched on my GPS unit. This lad was not going to get lost. But of course I had forgotten to charge the batteries. No problem. Thailand actually have roadsigns in English. We surely could get out of the Bangkok area and on towards Isaan?

I just forgot it was me and Nan doing the navigation. So we there we were, barreling straight for downtown Bangkok. A place I definitely did not want to go.

And I could find no exit that would lead us in the right direction. Until Nan made a judgement call…”left” she cried, and I followed her direction. And we were soon at a standstill, in some street in Bangkok and we did not know were we were at all.

So we did some more “go and come back” until Nan finally spotted at sign “Saraburi” it said. So we sped in that direction. And after some time we were there. And I was fed up with driving, and tired after the flight, so when we spotted a Hotel, we checked in for the night.
