I Need Some Sleep

May 21, 2007 |

sleep.jpgThere is a lot of things that are different between me and Nan. First of all, she is a girl and I am a man. And if that is not difficult enough, she is a morning person and I am a creature of the night. Or I used to be. But age must be creeping up on me. As I wake up to early in the morning, even on Sundays, my only day off work.

I have always needed my sleep. But once I wake up nowadays I cant get back to sleep again. So I get out of bed. Gone are the days when if I woke up early at all, I would just turn around and go back to sleep.

I guess this newly acquired thing will be handy when Nan wakes up with the chickens and cooks one of them for breakfast breakfast. That’s fine and dandy, because in the village, we go to bed around 8-9pm. And I never have any problem sleeping there. Well, at least so far.

But left to myself, with no Nan to cuddle up to, going to bed is a chore. I know it’s no use even trying until I am dead on my feet. I can’t just decide that “I should go to bed now because it’s a work day tomorrow”. Sleep won’t come until I am dead tired. And that does not happen until at least after 1am.

So when my alarm clock is ringing at 7, that gives me perhaps 5 hours of sleep, and it’s the the walking dead that finally shows up for work. And it gets worse day by day as I enter the week. It does not help when this last Sunday, the day I usually sleep in, I wake up at 8 in the morning. I did the same last week, so I am now starting my 3rd week on 5 hours of sleep a night. And it’s getting to me.

Now I could probably try to get some sleep in the afternoon, after work. But I hate that. The afternoon and evenings are my time. Time I spend reading a book, fooling around on the net or watching a movie, or my favourite, talking with Nan.

Well, it’s less than 2 weeks until Nan time, and I will get plenty of sleep again. With Nan…well, I can sleep any time, any place if she has got her arms wrapped around me…that is good sleep!

When You go back to Thailand, make sure you bring BACK TO WORK with you a couple of her tee shirts she HAS WORN. You can wrap them around a pillow and cuddle up to them. Of course its no substitute for the real thing but its better than nuttin. Myself,I need at least 3 pillows to sleep well at night.

Are you trying to tell us that the new girl is, hmmm… how should I say this…that she’s ‘big-boned’?

Yes, soon. The T-shirt idea is a good one. I wonder however if she will accept one of my sweat soaked ones for the same purpose… on the other, I did lieave my loundry with her, so the gods may know what she has been doing with it.

The picture of me that she keeps by her bed have me looking like an overgrown hobbit. She claims I look very hansum in it, so I just hope Frodo Baggins don’t stop by the next time he decides to visit the elves.

Same for me in Wichian Buri. I like to go to bed late and get up late with the aid of several cups cha and a few cigs (filthy habit. Must stop before baby born). But in Wichian no point. 8.00pm noodle stalls, motosai, noise, music and beer Chang at side of main drag. People everywhere. 8.05pm, ghost town with just the flickering of TV from the houses.

Creature of the night, eh? From what I recall, your day has 25 hours in it. So after some 20 days, you’re as happy in the morning as Nan is - for some days, then…

Biological wtches are sort of creepy, ain’t they?

Yeah, well, now that we are here in the village, I have no trouble sleeping, and we usually wake up around 7:30. Nan gives me a big smile and kiss, and then all hell breaks loose with kids demanding breakfast and builders arriving, food vendors passing by with loudspeakers on full blast announcing their wonderfull food etc…

I can sleep right trough the village headman making his morning announcements on the village loudspeaker system now, and that bloody rooster…I have not heard him for a few days. Maybe Nan finally got to him :-)
