Nan’s House
March 23, 2007 |
Frankly I have no idea where it really is. I only know it is a small house 20-30 minutes by motorcycle from Buri Ram. The name of the village totally escapes me. But it is very small, about 50 people. They are about 7 people in the household, and their animals and land is managed by her uncle, as her father died a few years ago.
It must be a clean house because Nan is cleaning it every day. This morning however Nan busied herself by cleaning the family motorbike instead. Nan is however somewhat scared of that motorbike, as she has had a couple of accidents on it. That happened back when she was working in Buri Ram and made the drive into town every morning.
But back to the house. Amid today’s exchange of small talk and jokes, she told me about the small house.
- What is your house made from? Wood, concrete, stone?
- I don’t know (Nan speak for I do not understand)
-Okay, is it made from wood?
-What is wood, teerak?
-Oh, um…is it made from a tree?
-I think many tree, teerak *giggles*
-Yes I think so too
-And have like stone, but not same.
-Ok, its made from wood and bricks then.
-Kha, I think correct.
So thats the place I am going to visit. A small village, with a small wood and brick house somewhere near Buri Ram. I will do the same as I have done before. Rent a pick-up truck, probably a Toyota Hi-Lux or similar, load Nan and her stuff inside and drive up there. With a small change from the trips I had with Lek, where we just blasted up there as fast as I dared to drive. We will take it slow and stop and see something along the way. Eat some nice food, and generally take our time.
I will even buy one of those guide books, just so that I know about some places before we start. Navigation will be trusted to my GPS, as I have a fair idea that as soon as we hit the road, Nan will be unconscious. No problem, I have driven that way before.
At Nan’s house, her Mama will be waiting. Apparently her mother has already approved of me, as Nan is reporting that her mama think I am good “sanuk”. She is basically relaying all the “ting tong” stuff I say to make her laugh, to her mom, who is “laughing to mut” when she tell her about me. So that’s the in-laws sorted then ![]()
We will spend 2-3 days up there, then head back to Pattaya for Songkhran to get “wet to mut”, and have as much sanuk as we can. I have a cunning plan for when we visit her old bar, involving water balloons, and much sneaking to approach it. Nan was in stitches when I told her about it. A full after-action battle report will be submitted when I am back from that trip!
Well, have a good weekend folks, and don’t be shy, drop a comment or two!
